What is a Goal?

There are three distinct characteristics that identify a goal:

  1. REQUIRES TRANSFORMATION:

A goal will transform your life in a subtle or immense way, but always for the better.

  2. REQUIRES A TIMELINE

The goal is always a future state, in order for you to meet your goal it will take time and planning. You will need to get intentional and clear about what you need to do and how you will do it.

  3. REQUIRES RESOURCES + ACTION

All goals will require resources in the form of energy, people, or tools to accomplish. Without resources a goal becomes an impossibility. Without action, it becomes obsolete.

What confuses this understanding is that we think of a goal as static or as an end-state element. Meaning, once you reach your goal we’d imagine that we have arrived at the final destination or desired outcome. However, this cannot be further from the truth.

A true goal forces us to move out of our comfort zone and out of our current status quo. As we reach our goal, or while we work on it — a goal is in constant state of change.

As we change, we become wiser and learn to dreamer bigger and deeper, and our goals change to accommodate our new selves. If it is not, you have given up on your goal. Your goal is no more.
